Silkscreen printing

Filed under: Silk Screening — Admin @ 12:50 pm

Silkscreen printing
Printing is an old form of duplicating images. It is believed that woodcut is probably the oldest form of printing and later silkscreen printing originated in Europe. The belief of scholars is that the inception of silkscreen printing was in China during the time of the Song Dynasty. It was spread to Japan, later where it became the second popular form of print. Screen printing and silkscreen printing are totally different, contrary to popular belief. Screen printing is carried out using a machine whereas silkscreen printing requires the hand of the artist. This is one of the reasons for the high price for a silkscreen print. Silkscreen gained impetus in England as a result of the efforts of Samuel Simon. He was the first person to use silkscreen printing for the creation of expensive wallpaper. Screen print was used to duplicate the key design. Silk mesh, that had to be brought from China, was facing a scarcity and it gradually brought about the failure of this idea. Andy Warhol brought out this technique with his famed silkscreen prints of Marilyn Monroe. These prints created history and even challenged well established forms of art such as oil paintings. The technique of silkscreen printing is very simple. The basic idea is that the forms are inked with chemical acids and dyes. The portions that are to be inked are blocked using stencils. An inked screen is placed in a press. A print is taken on paper or cloth. The word ‘Serigraphy’ was later coined in the 1930s by a group of artists who formed the National Serigraphic Society. This is because the word ‘Seri’ means silk and ‘graphy’ is a derivative of the word ‘graphein’ that means ‘to draw’ in Greek. The main purpose of this differentiation was because to separate that industrial application of screen printing from the artistic applications that this technique has. Today, silkscreen printing has undergone a lot of changes. The main advantage is that the color is spread very evenly to give it an appearance that is similar to paintings. It is a form of art for people who like to have a good version of a masterpiece. However, the price of this form of art is what is holding many people back. For this reason, silk is been replaced by nylon and polyester. Even paper, fabric, wood and plastic can be used for this purpose. As a result of the replacement of silk by various other materials the cost of this form of art has drastically has down leading to their immense popularity and availability.
